Appraisal day in Kiev
May 9, 2010.
It was a great pleasure to be part of a superbly organized appraisal day near Kiev. Twenty nine dogs of high quality were presented, and the love, respect and interaction between master and dog was remarkable. The organizers went to great pains to get such a large attendance, and thereby they made sure that this first appraisal in Ukraine was a large success. The day was spent in a wonderful atmosphere of friendship, and we as foreigners, enjoyed the hospitality very much.
From the first dogs that arrived, it was clear that the Ukraine Boerboels was tall and well grown out. Usually, at an appraisal like this elsewhere, you will find a few bad dogs, but on this day there were very, very few dogs of a low quality.
The puppies were only evaluated in a general view, and a few comments made. In general it could be said that the young Boerboels in this country are of high quality. Generally speaking, the most obvious areas that need improvement are width of muzzle, head and chest. Selection for heavier bone will also improve the size of the head.
The SABT (SABBA) usually only appraise dogs older than 12 months, but because of this unique opportunity to appraise the dogs, that requirement was not adhered to. The result was that the young dogs scored lower than what they would score when mature.
From the beginning it was clear that the quality of the dogs was high. The overwhelming impression was that the dogs was tall and needed some strength. In order for a dog to receive correct (+) for size, it must be tall, wide, with thick bone, a large head and with strong muscling. Many tall and heavy dogs did not receive a correct mark for size, because they lacked bone and head size or muzzle width. This could create the impression that the Boerboel must be bred taller. In actual fact the Ukraine dogs could be bred with less height and more strength and bone. A few years ago the Boerboel standard excluded male dogs taller than 70 cm and females taller than 67 cm. If that rule was still applied, many of the dogs present on this day would have been disqualified. Keeping that in mind, the Ukraine breeders could make a large improvement to their dogs by selecting for dogs with a better balance between fame and strength.
Many of the Boerboels in the rest of the world have a problem with lips. Drooling jowls is a problem of many good dogs. In the Ukraine that is not a problem. A very large percentage of the dogs received correct for lips.
Probably the most obvious fault in the Ukraine Boerboel population is the narrow chests and elbows that are pinched in under the chest. We do see that in certain families in South Africa, but it is a rare occurrence compared what was seen here. Selection for wide chests with open elbows is surely an urgent requirement for this dog population.
By stressing the negative, the impression might be created that the Ukraine Boerboel is in a bad state or that they cannot compete with the dogs world wide. On the contrary: The Ukraine Boerboel will in future play a very important role in providing breeding stock for the rest of the world. With the genetic basis for frame (size, top line, legs) that exist here, the rest of the picture could easily be filled in by the right selection, to produce a balanced dog that is sought after by many other countries. The excessive height that is currently a negative, could easily be turned around to be a positive, by bringing in some strength (head, chest, bone, muscle) to produce an all round large, well balanced dog. With that said about the dogs in general, it might be added that for the individual dogs, the emphasis was placed on what is wrong and needs to be corrected. Owners might feel disheartened by the fact that their excellent dogs were criticized. The aim of the appraisal system is to move towards perfection, and therefore, even the very best are criticized, so that they may achieve the ever elusive perfection that every breeder strives for.
In the euphoria of the good scores that the dogs achieved, one tends to forget that the Boerboel developed into the wonderful animal it is without the appraisal system! Not included in the appraisal system is a proper evaluation of the temperament and health. All these factors decide the functionality of the dog and are a helpful tool in preserving the working qualities of our breed. We are in the process of implementing a Total Performance Index (TPI) system whereby all these factors will be allocated a certain weight to determine the total value of the dog. This will all form part of the Progeny Testing Scheme that will give an accurate indication of the genetic abilities of the breeding dogs. Every breeder will be eager to know for sure which breeding dogs will provide the genetics he is looking for. It is therefore very important that we test all the Boerboels in the world, and compare them on the same standards. For that we need to have them on the same Data Base. We therefore urge every breeder to participate in this system: Judged by what was shown on this day, the Ukraine dogs will feature in the top ranks of the Progeny Results very soon.
